Lucida Medical welcomes NICE draft recommendations on AI support for prostate cancer diagnosis

Cambridge, UK – 27 October 2026 – Lucida Medical has welcomed the publication of draft guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which names the company’s Prostate Intelligence (Pi™) software as one of five artificial intelligence technologies that could be used in the NHS to support radiologists assessing prostate MRI scans.

Published on 23 October, the draft guidance proposes that the five technologies may be used during a two-year evidence-generation period. The proposals are now open for public consultation and may be amended before NICE publishes its final recommendations.

NICE’s independent committee recognised the potential for AI technologies to improve the accuracy and consistency of prostate MRI interpretation, particularly in settings where specialist expertise is less readily available. It also acknowledged that further evidence is needed to establish how the technologies perform in routine NHS practice and the extent to which they can improve patient care.

Dr Antony Rix, Chief Executive and Co-founder of Lucida Medical, commented:

“We welcome NICE’s considered approach. The draft guidance recognises the promise of AI in prostate MRI, and reflects the growing interest in technologies that can support radiologists, as demand for prostate MRI continues to increase across the NHS. We are pleased to contribute further evidence supporting the benefits that Pi™ can offer to the NHS and to patients.”

Prostate Intelligence uses AI to analyse MRI scans, identify areas where prostate cancer may be present and provide information to assist clinical interpretation. Radiologists remain responsible for reviewing scans and making clinical assessments.

Under the draft recommendations, the technologies could be used and evaluated within NHS services and paid for through core NHS funding during the proposed two-year period, subject to appropriate regulatory and NHS approvals.

Lucida Medical is already working with NHS partners to evaluate Pi™ in clinical practice, including a pilot across four NHS trusts in Greater Manchester announced in August 2026.

Lucy Davies, VP Clinical at Lucida Medical, added:

“NICE’s draft guidance recognises the potential role AI can play in supporting prostate MRI interpretation. We look forward to continuing our work with NICE and NHS partners to generate further evidence for Prostate Intelligence (Pi™) and better understand its impact in routine clinical practice.”

The public consultation on NICE’s draft guidance closes on 12 November 2026. NICE will consider the responses received before confirming its final recommendations.
